St, Andrews by the Sea - a jewel

So we slept in today, I mean really slept in.  Let's just say that the free breakfast included with our room stopped serving at 11, and we had to rush a bit to make it before time was up.

We went to the local Aquarium today for a visit, a nice small, simple place.  There was an exhibit where you could reach in to pick up Star Fish, Hermit crabs, other crabs etc.  It was fun pushing all of the kids out of the way to get to these creatures.

They had a tank full of salmon and yes Bruce, I did find that flounder you asked about earlier in our trip.

Next we went to Kingsbrae Gardens.  Barb loves gardening and flowers, so we walked through this place to see what they had.  We were disappointed since many of the gardens and flowers were not identified with a sign.  A lady working there explained that gardens with signs we were expecting is a Botanical Garden, while Kingsbrae is a horticultural garden.  Here they just display the different plants, which were lovely, but they do not include anything to identify the different types of plants.

Here at St. Andrews, we again got to witness the tides, since this place is also on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy.  The tides rise here up to 23 feet.  At Hopewell Rocks the tides rise over 50 feet.

Here are a couple of pictures of the St. Andrews harbour at low tide and high tide.  I think it looks much better here at high tide.

Out for dinner again tonight on the waterfront since this will be our last evening in the Atlantic provinces and the Bay of Fundy. So here is another example of how nice this place and its residents are.  Driving into the downtown core, I park the van on the main street like everyone else.  A white SUV behind me pulls beside me on the street and stops, holding up traffic.  I look at the driver and he signals me to roll down my window.  (WHAT AM I NOT ALLOWED TO PARK HERE) I think to myself.  The driver, an older gentleman says I read your back window, congratulations, where are you from.  We had a two minute conversation, holding up traffic and not one horn was honked. People are so nice here.

Even the deer are friendly, this group of 5 deer were just on the side of the road having a meal this afternoon.  Nobody bothers them, and the deer are okay being in this populated area.

One other thing we did try here, DULCE.  While on our ferry ride from Digby to Saint John, a lady was giving a talk about the Bay and different sea creatures living here.  Whales of many types, dolphins and other life.  She then showed us a type of sea weed that grows here and can be found on shore at low tide,  dulce.  She offered us some to eat, it is very salty. Someone in the group suggested that if you fry it, it tastes like bacon, the vegetarian version.  I'm not sure we will have it again, but it was an experience.

We leave Canada tomorrow for Trumpville, but only for 1 day.  Lets hope they let us in .... and more importantly, out!!

  1. Hey, you got a lot accomplished for being up just half a day!!!! We'll cross our fingers for you that things go well for you in "Trumpville"....just check that you lock the doors to your van so that you don't tempt any stowaways with those Ontario plates! Have fun! Eh?
