History - Pride - Beauty - Respect

These four words describe our day yesterday, and the fact that we could not get online. Seems that the network here in the hotel was overloaded.

So we began by heading to downtown Halifax. While walking on the boardwalk someone shouted to his family, "Here comes the train".

It was a little train that tours around the waterfront so we hopped on to take a quick tour.

Next we visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where we got to read about the History of Halifax, the area including the great explosion and fire from December 6, 1917. The pictures, stories and artifacts were shocking to imagine living through this disaster.  The quilt below was done by a local artist to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this event.

She also created these scrolls which are on display that show all of the names and ages of the victims and the names are also in braille since so many people lost their eyesight from glass that shattered during the explosion.

Next we went through the section of the Museum to see the events and artifacts from the Titanic. Again so many sad events that have happened here in Halifax.

Two years ago, Barb and I started our trip of a lifetime in Scotland and down through the UK. We visited Amsterdam on that trip and landed right in the middle of Gay Pride week in Amsterdam.  Well this year we had the opportunity to watch the Pride Parade in Halifax.  We missed seeing our Prime Minister in the parade, but it was quite a happy event to watch.

From the parade we wanted to visit the gravesites of the Titanic victims, however the cemetery is closed on the weekends.  Never heard of this before but we could not get in.

So off to see some more beautiful parts of the Halifax area, Peggys Cove. The view and rocks at this location is stunning.

Our final journey of the day was to visit the Swissair Flight 111 memorial to pay our Respects to the victims of this plane that crashed just off the coast here on September 2nd, 1998.

On our way home we stopped in West Dover to eat. A little coastal town with great food.  Yum time for more mussels.

Ha ha, we still suck taking selfies.

  1. Sadly, we had to retire for the evening last night without knowing where you were, what you ate, who you saw and how your vehicle made out. We need to get a life.
